To insert a photo click insert then photo and click on the photo you want and it should pop up on the screen. Drag the corners to make it smaller. Because your transforming it to an other document. Grace

The reason photos are difficult to manipulate in Word is because Word is for writing documents, and not photo editing. Try Picasa or Photoshop if you're interested in that.
